Landscape (topography & parent material): Rolling to hilly, mildly dissected plateaux at about 1 590 - 1 950 m. The main rocks are gneiss and schist; some Tertiary basalt, Ordovician shales, mudstones and granodiorite.

Soils
      Dominant: Shallow organic loams.
      Other: Peat-Organic soils. Undifferentiated stony loams.

Native Vegetation (form & dominant species):
Complex of snow grass, snow daisy grassland and herbfield, with shrub communities of Hovea, Grevillea, Kunzea, Orites, epacrids, as well as snow gum sub-alpine woodland. Sphagnum moss bogs and sedge fends in wet situations.

Land Use:
This area has the highest water yield in the catchment. The water is used for hydro-electric power generation. Summer grazing of cattle. Snow sports in the winter. Control of all activities in the area, especially grazing, is essential to ensure that no decline in the water-supply capability occurs.

Erosion (present and hazard):
Wind and water erosion hazards are moderate to high. Decline in the ability of the soil to absorb and hold water leads to adverse changes in water supply characteristics.
