Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:

385570. 16 kilometres south-west of Goongerah.

Abstract:

Outliers of Silurian sediments.

Access:

Scanlon Creek road off Bonang Highway.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology:

A small outlier of Silurian sediments occurs at the head of Riddle Creek. these consist primarily of coarse conglomerates and shales while a band of greyish-white marble containing crinoid stems has been recorded. The conglomerates are over 600 metres thick and consist predominantly of well rounded clasts up to 25 centimetres in diameter, composed of Lower Palaeozoic bedrock, which are set in a fine grained clay matrix.

Significance:

Regional. This is the most easterly recorded outcrop of Silurian sediments in Victoria. Investigation of the sedimentary sequence is incomplete and further work may yield additional stratigraphical information.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site the value of the significant geological features is unlikely to be seriously reduced by localised disturbance, e.g. road works or extractive industries.
