Location:

040498. Road cuttings along the Buchan - Murrindal Road, just north of Buchan.

Abstract:

Buchan Group Syclinorium.

Access:

As above.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology:

The major part of the basin in which the Buchan Group Sediments occur may be regarded as a synclinorium. The thickest sediment accumulation and the greatest of folds occur just north-east of Buchan. The fold axes are oriented approximately north-south and consequently, road cuttings which cross these axes east-west provide exposures which allow for an overview of the structure of the basin. The best, and most readily accessible exposure is provided by the road cuttings of the Buchan - Murrindal Road, just north of Buchan. At this locality mudstones, nodular limestones and limestones of the Taravale Formation are folded into broad synclines. An important granodiorite fauna is found in these road cuttings and a massive limestone bed east of the first anticline contains the coral, Favosites. Such massive corals are rare in the cental basin area.

Significance:

Regional. Best exposure and most easily accessible site which portrays the folded nature of the Buchan Group.

Management:

Maintenance of clear section faces would enhance the site quality.
