This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers,
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Private Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Wild Dog Creek includes one of the few gorges to be found in the South Gippsland Hills. The steepest and deepest section lies south of “Ferndale” where Cretaceous rocks form cliffs over 10 metres high on the eastern side of the valley. Outcrops are extensive in the creek bed and on cliffs and bluffs along a one kilometre section of the creek. A large rockfall has been active recently on the western bank and has contributed new material to an already large talus cone.

Significance:

Regional. This section of Wild Dog Creek is one of the few deep valley and gorge sections in the western part of the South Gippsland Hills. Outcrops are extensive and represent a major exposure of Cretaceous rocks. Opportunity exists for studies of slope development and erosional history of the gorge sector.

Management:

Reservoir construction which would flood the valley above Jubilee Creek should be prohibited. Removal of rock material from the exposed slopes should not be permitted.
