3. Ferndale Cliffs

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers,
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the South Gippsland Marine and Coastal Parks (1989) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Access:
Ferndale Road.

Ownership:

Private Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Thin bedded Cretaceous sandstone outcrop as a cliff over 200 metres long and five to eight metres high. Exposures are extensive and the cliff is an impressive relief feature. It contrasts with the typically convex form of the adjacent hillslopes. A broad talus slope lies at the cliff base and the fresh rock debris on this slope indicates the active nature of the cliff face.

Significance:

State. The cliff is an unusual relief feature in the South Gippsland Hills. It provides an extensive outcrop of Cretaceous rock, and illustrates several bedding and depositional structures of that material. It is one of the few cliffs developed in the Cretaceous rocks that is not immediately above a river channel and warrants further investigation to determine its evolution.

Management:

Quarrying of the cliff face exposures should be prohibited as this would seriously reduce the interest of the site for studies in cliff evolution.
