This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers,
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the South Gippsland Marine and Coastal Parks (1989) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:945684. Ridge extending from Holey Hill to Limestone Quarry Road.Sites of Geological & Geomorphological Significance - Figure 23
Sites 8221 - 7 to 11

Access:

Holey Hill Track.

Ownership:

Crown Land (Holey Plains State Park).

Geology/Geomorphology:

A prominent ridge extending west from Holey Hill is developed on weakly consolidated Haunted Hill Gravels. These are clearly exposed in a small quarry near the intersection of Holey Hill Track and Limestone Quarry Road. Two small inliers of Gippsland Limestone are exposed tot he north of the slopes of Honeysuckle hill.

Significance:
Regional. This ridge is the most prominent of the east-west trending ridges which are the dominant landform of the Holey Plains State Park.

Management:

Limited quarrying of the Haunted Hill Gravels and the Gippsland Limestone deposits would be unlikely to significantly degrade the interest of the site. It is noted that the small quarry at 907683 now provides an interesting section into the gravel materials of the ridge and at least one small face of this quarry should be maintained as a reference section.
