8221-24 to 30 Fossil Localities
This information has been developed from the publications:
|
Location: | 586574 to 564465. Road cutting and river cliffs along Traralgon Creek upstream from Koornalla. | Traralgon Creek near Valley View - Thin black coal seam (between dotted lines), in Cretaceous sediments. |
Access: | Traralgon Creek Road.
Ownership: | Crown Land.
Geology/Geomorphology: | The creek valley is deeply incised and there is extensive outcrop of Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rock in the stream channel and valley walls and in road cutting. All these exposures are of importance as they display a range of lithologies including black coal in the Cretaceous rocks and several are of outstanding significance as they contain major fossil plant remains.
Significance: | State. Because very little detailed stratigraphical analysis has been undertaken of the Lower Cretaceous in eastern Victoria, all fossil localities must be regarded as highly significant.
Management: | Flooding of these sites by dam construction in the Traralgon Creek would destroy the significance of these sites. Road widening would be compatible with the maintenance of the sites. |
