23. Road Cuttings North Balook

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers,
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the South Gippsland Marine and Coastal Parks (1989) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:621490 to 620493. 2.5 kilometres north of Balook.
Image: West Gippsland Sites of Significance
Older volcanics (A), overlying Cretaceous sediments (B). Sub-basaltic sediments include conglomerate (arrowed) - North Balook road cutting.

Access:

Road cuttings along the main Balook-Traralgon Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land (road reserve).

Geology/Geomorphology:

Road cuttings expose sections of the Carrajung Volcanics, and display a contact with a sub-basaltic conglomerate which overlies weathered Cretaceous sediments. The volcanics are strongly jointed forming four to eight-sided columns. The outline of the joint columns is prominent where deep weathering has left corestones of basalt surrounded by dark red-brown clay soil.

Significance:

Regional. This is a clear exposure of fresh sections through the Carrajung Volcanics and underlying material.

Management:

Maintenance of clear exposures in the road cuttings will maintain the significance of the site.
