20. McKenzie Road Swamp

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers,
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the South Gippsland Marine and Coastal Parks (1989) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Access:
McKenzie Road off Yarram-Traralgon Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

This is an oval shaped basin approximately 200 metres long on its main axis. The basin lies on a small saddle between two creeks and appears to have no outlet. The origin of the basin is not readily apparent but there is a belt of small lakes and swamps, (six in all), including the larger, drained Grasstree Swamp, that extend between Bodman and Bruthen Creeks.

Of particular interest at this site are large specimens of Restio tetraphyllus, (Tassell Cord Rush, and an extensive growth of Sphagnum cristatum (Sphagnum moss).

Significance:

State. This swamp is very different from any other examined in the present study area. The pedestals of peat at the base of the cord rush are unusual and thick accumulations of sphagnum moss sugest that the area could be of great value for pollen analysis which would contribute to an understanding of the geomorphological evolution of many swamps in this area.

Management:

Grazing of the swamp or any clearing and drainage of the area delineated for this site should be absolutely prohibited so as not to damage any of the significant geomorphological or ecological features.
