9. Road Cutting - Trafalgar to Thorpdale Road

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:285650. Two or three kilometres north of Thorpdale.

Access:

Thorpdale-Traralgon Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land (Road Reserve).

Geology/Geomorphology:

Road cuttings on the western side of the road display clearly the deep red loamy soils and the depth of weathering that is characteristic of the Tertiary Older Volcanic rocks of the Thorpdale area.

Significance:

Local. This is one of the best profiles of the soils and Older Basalts of the area.

Management:

Occasional grading of the cutting is necessary to maintain a clear and fresh exposure of the weathering profile.
