Geology/Geomorphology: | Napier No. 1 quarry is one of a number of excavations in the South Gippsland area where bauxite was mined. The bauxite mineralisation is here associated with weathering of the Older Volcanics.
Significance: | Regional. This was one of the largest of the bauxite quarries that operated in the South Gippsland area.
Management: | The quarry is now abandoned and little evidence of the bauxite deposit remains as the faces have been graded and partly revegetated in a land reclamation project. This project, while reducing erosion, has obscured an important geological section which would have contributed to the understanding of bauxite genesis in the area. Consequently, if the site is to be retained as one of geological interest a small section should be excavated exposing the bauxite and the enclosing materials.
