5. Haunted Hill Gravels - Boolarra South

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the South Gippsland Marine and Coastal Parks (1989) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:385465. Foxes and Fanckes Road, 2.5 kilometres north of Boolarra South).

Access:

Foxes and Fanckes Road off Morwell River Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land (Road Reserve) and some Private Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Shallow quarries and new road cuttings expose cross-bedded coarse sands and minor gravels of the Haunted Hill Gravels.

Significance:

Regional. This is a clear display of the bedding forms which are important in determining the environment of deposition of the Haunted Hill Gravels.

Management:

At least one face of the quarries on the road or on the adjacent property should be maintained as a reference section by occasional excavation.
