Location: | 315640. Four kilometres north-east of Thorpdale on the Narracan Creek. | Older Basalt at Narracan Falls. |
Access: | Narracan Falls Road.
Ownership: | Crown Land.
Geology/Geomorphology: | The main waterfall is five metres high and is formed on Tertiary Thorpdale Volcanics. These rocks also outcrop forming rapids in the creek for a distance of one kilometre below the falls. Of interest also are several springs which occur along the valley walls.
Significance: | Regional. Because of the depth of weathering, exposures of Older Volcanic rocks are sparse in the region and this valley outcrop is one of the most extensive in South Gippsland.
Management: | Damming the Narracan Creek below the falls would destroy the value of the site. Limited quarrying of the valley side slopes would be compatible with keeping the geological interest of the site. |
