15. Junction of the East and West Branches of the Tanjil River

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the coast of Port Phillip Bay and in the Catchment of Westernport Bay (1984, 88) by Neville Rosengren.

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:290962. Six kilometres south-east of Fumina South.

Access:

Rowleys Ridge Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Siltstone and sandstones of the Boola Formation are well exposed in a small quarry and in low road cuttings at this locality. Road cuttings approximately one kilometre north of the river junction expose Wilson Creek Shale.

Significance:
Regional. The type locality for Wilson Creek Shale is outside the study area. This formation although occurring at several localities in the study area, is generally poorly exposed. At this site the shale is relatively well exposed and characteristic of the formation and the site is nominated as a reference site.

Management:

Maintenance of clear exposures in the quarry and road cutting would maintain the value of the site. The quarry management statement on page 6 of this report applies here.
