5. Hazel Park "Basin" (Toora Depression)

This information has been developed from the publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

447259. Eight to ten kilometres north of Toora.

Older volcanics (A) overlying Yarram Formation - Hazel Park.

Access:

Hazel Park Road.

Ownership:

Private Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

This is a small fault basin between the Yarram Monocline and the Toora Fault. A small outlier of Haunted Hill Gravels is preserved and in places there are erosion inliers of Older Volcanics. A quarry at G.R. 447259 exposes sand and gravel of the Yarram Formation below the weathered basalt.

The basin is an area of low relief drained by the Agnes River which here has a broad, alluviated valley.

Significance:

Regional. The area illustrates the effect of faulting on relief. The profile across the Agnes River valley here contrasts markedly with the gorge sectors developed below Agnes Falls.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site, the value of the significant geological and geomorphological features is unlikely to be affected by land use changes which disturb only a part of the site. Small scale quarrying or drainage could be permitted.
