This information has been developed from the publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

343345. Eight kilometres south-east of Mirboo.

Access:

Turtons Creek Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

A series of rapids and two sets of waterfalls occur along a two kilometre stretch of Turtons Creek.

Significance:

Regional. Rapids and waterfalls are not common features of streams draining across the Cretaceous rocks in Central Gippsland.

Management:

Reservoir construction across Turtons Creek that would submerge the falls should be prohibited as this would destroy the significance of the site. Any road widening program adjacent to the creek should not deposit rock spoil into the creek.
