What is the problem
  • The species is highly palatable and has declined in native pastures due to factors such as stock grazing and pasture improvement.
  • The best grazing regime to promote growth, seed production and survival is unknown.

What are the solutions
  • Restrict stock grazing early in the growing season, from late spring to late summer.
  • Grazing regimes depend on species composition of the pasture and seasonal conditions, and management needs to be adjusted yearly.

What farmers said
“We have other benefits that come with that too. We used to lamb in the autumn and we could put pregnant ewes down in the grassland around that time and we had the benefit of clean pasture for them – worms can be such a big problem for the sheep industry.”
