A land capability study was undertaken by M S Lorimer of the former Department of Natural Resources and Environment in 1996 encompassing the Cathedral Range - Acheron River valley. Twenty-four land units were identified according to geology and topography of the land using aerial photo interpretation, geological mapping and field inspection of the soils, the vegetation and physiography.
Land capability information can be used by planners to assist in the preparation of planning strategies and to encourage the most appropriate land uses and management practices so that a sustainable level of productivity is maintained and land degradation, in the short term and long term, is minimised.
This report provides information for broad-scale planning, based on an assessment of the physical characteristics of the land, for the area that includes the Cathedral Range and the Acheron River valley between the townships of Buxton and Taggerty. It does not provide recommendations for land use and no allowance has been made for social or economic considerations which may influence planning proposals. It is primarily an examination of potential consequences and levels of management required for a range of land uses.
