Abstract: | Crevasse delta on flood plain.
Access: | The Heart Landing Road.
Ownership: | Private land.
Geomorphology: | The flood plain of the LaTrobe River downstream from the Thomson River junction is a broad wetland of swamps and lagoons contained between well defined valley side bluffs. The river has high natural levee banks breached in places by flood crevasses which have built sandy and silty lobes into the swamp. These may be re-activated during successive floods and develop an elongate delta-like form such as that illustrated on the northern edge of The Heat Morass.
Significance: | Local. Similar forms appear on the flood plain of the Snowy River (8622 - 13).
Management: | Drainage of the morass should be prohibited as this would isolate the crevasse and reduce the significance of the site for measurement of rates of accretion. |
