Geomorphology: | The Goodwin Sands, are an outcrop of an indurated section of a Pleistocene sand barrier that formed in front of the bluff on the northern sector of Howe Flat. This older barrier dates from a higher sea level phase in the late Pleistocene and consists of beach sand and remnants of surmounting dunes. This barrier feature is now considerably eroded. The outcrop in the Mallacoota Lake has been partially covered by beach sands and now forms an extensive shoal area of small islands, spits and shallow water sand banks and bars. | |
Significance: | Regional. This is a major exposure of the older barrier formation at Mallacoota and may be compared with similar materials in other estuary systems in Gippsland. |
