Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

380690. 13 kilometres north-west of Goongerah.

Abstract:

Faulted contact between Silurian and Ordovician sediments, and fault controlled Yalmy River Valley.

Access:

Yalmy Road via Aberdeen Road off Bonang Highway.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Silurian quartzite sandstone, mudstone and shales are faulted against Ordovician sediments in the Yalmy River Valley. The Yalmy River has incised a deep valley along the fault line and produced an erosion escarpment (fault line scarp) in Silurian sediments on the northern valley slopes of the river. The ridge separating the Yalmy River from the Rodger River is distinctly asymmetrical in shape with the northern slope cut in Snowy River Volcanics being less dissected and of lower gradient than the slopes of the south.

Significance:

Regional. the exposures of Silurian sediments, the faulted contact between these and the Ordovician sediments and the structural geological control of the drainage systems are of considerable geological and geomorphological interest.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site the value of the geological/geomorphological significant features is unlikely to be seriously reduced by localised disturbance, e.g. road works, extractive industries.
