Abstract: | Outlier of Tertiary Older Volcanics.
Access: | Track through private property from Tubbut.
Ownership: | Private property.
Geology: | Several flows of olivine rich Lower Tertiary basalts outcrop at Basalt Hill. The lowest flow is highly weathered producing deep red soils while the upper flow is less completely weathered and consists of rounded basalt boulders. The location of the eruption points of the Older Volcanics is unknown. The basalts of this are overly fine grained adamellites.
Significance: | Local. Exposures of Tertiary Older Volcanics east of the Snowy River are highly weathered and occur as isolated hilltop remnants. The Basalt Hill exposure is typical of these deposits.
Management: | Because of the area covered by the site the value of the significant geological features is unlikely to be seriously reduced by localised disturbance, e.g. road works, extractive industries or agriculture. Limited quarrying map in fact enhance the geological significance by providing additional exposure. |
