Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:

570910 to 610980. 11 kilometres west of Mt Delegate.

Abstract:

Granite basin, Tombong Wrench and contact metamorphic ridge.

Access:

Bonang Highway.

Ownership:

Crown land and private land.

Geology:

Differential erosion of the softer biotite-hornblende rich granodiorite by the Delegate River and minor tributaries has resulted in the formation of a gently undulating basin topography. This basin is confined on the east and wet by more resistant Ordovician meta-sediments upon which steeper slopes have developed. The western contact metamorphic ridge is particularly prominent and together with the Tombong Wrench has influenced the orientation of the Delegate River.

Significance:

Local. The prominent contact metamorphic ridge and granite basin are typical of the topography occurring in association with granite intrusions into Ordovician sediments.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site, the value of significant geological and geomorphological features would not be seriously reduced by localised disturbance, e.g. road works, extractive industries or agriculture.
