Abstract: | Ordovician graptolites in black slates.
Access: | Mt Tingaringy Track.
Ownership: | Crown land (partly Tingaringy National Park).
Geology: | Steeply dipping Ordovician black slates outcrop in the bed of McLaughlan Creek. These slates are graptolite-bearing and have been tentatively identified as Dicellograptus anceps and Diplograptus canei. Graptolite-bearing black slates also outcrop in a road cutting adjacent to the first hairpen bend on the Mt Tingaringy Road.
Significance: | Regional. Graptolite-bearing Ordovician strata are rare in East Gippsland. The McLaughlan Creek fossil site has not been studied in detail, and further studies may yield important stratigraphical information.
Management: | Restriction should be placed on the collection of fossil as the outcrop is of limited extent.
