Location: | 655158. 7 kilometres south-east of Bemm River.
Abstract: | Dune covered headland of Palaeozoic rock. Heavy mineral concentration.
Access: | Unformed road from Bemm River township
Ownership: | Crown Land.
Geology: | Palaeozoic sandstones and slates strike north-south and dip steeply to the east. Minor deposits of heavy minerals are found on either side of the point with the highest concentration on a small beach and dune swale on the eastern side. The seam directly overlies bedrock and extends for about 240 metres along the coast in a belt up to 40 metres wide. It varies in total thickness from 5 centimetres to more than 30 centimetres and consists predominantly of ilmenite with minor zircon and rutile. The concentrations average 29% and the total deposit had been estimated at 1655 tonnes.
Significance: | Regional. This is the largest recorded heavy mineral deposit in Gippsland but the small reserve does not render it currently of economic value.
Management: | Beach and dune erosion periodically exposes part of the seam and any camping reserve should be located away from the mineral site. |
