Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Location:

655158. 7 kilometres south-east of Bemm River.

Abstract:

Dune covered headland of Palaeozoic rock. Heavy mineral concentration.

Access:

Unformed road from Bemm River township

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology:

Palaeozoic sandstones and slates strike north-south and dip steeply to the east. Minor deposits of heavy minerals are found on either side of the point with the highest concentration on a small beach and dune swale on the eastern side. The seam directly overlies bedrock and extends for about 240 metres along the coast in a belt up to 40 metres wide. It varies in total thickness from 5 centimetres to more than 30 centimetres and consists predominantly of ilmenite with minor zircon and rutile. The concentrations average 29% and the total deposit had been estimated at 1655 tonnes.

Significance:

Regional. This is the largest recorded heavy mineral deposit in Gippsland but the small reserve does not render it currently of economic value.

Management:

Beach and dune erosion periodically exposes part of the seam and any camping reserve should be located away from the mineral site.
