Location:

Abstract:

Mineralization associated with faulting in Ordovician sediments.

Access:

Racecourse Creek Track.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology:

At this locality Ordovician sediments with prominent quartzite beds have been intruded by Lower Silurian granodiorite. The sediments are extensively faulted and copper mineralization is associated with brecciated quartzites which contain numerous and often massive quartz veins. This area has previously been mined and would be of particular interest to mineral collectors as good hand specimens of chalcopyrite, pyrite, azurite, malachite and barite are easily obtained.

Significance:

Regional. The area displays a clear example of the diverse mineralization of the Palaeozoic rocks of East Gippsland.

Management:

Public access to the site should be maintained. Old adits and mine shafts should be inspected for public safety and closed where necessary.
