Abstract:

Exposures of Buchan Caves Limestone and Tertiary Older Volcanics.

Access:

Buchan - Gelantipy Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology:

The Butchers Ridge Limestone is located on the main synclinal axis which extends between Murrindal and Wulgulmerang. Outcrops are either side of the Buchan - Gelantipy Road. The limestone is richly fossiliferous, gently dipping and conformably overlies the Snowy River Volcanics. Rhyolite and agglomerate of the Volcanics are exposed in the gully to the north-east of the main limestone crop. These are overlain by unfossilferous dolomite and dolomitic limestone and then by calcarenites containing corals, e.g. Breviphyllum recessum. The fossil fauna at this locality is generally much more varied than further south in the Buchan Caves Limestone.

The limestone is overlain by Older Tertiary basalts and these are well exposed on the ridge on the eastern side of Butchers Creek.

Significance:

Local.

Management:

Land use which may obscure or remove the limestone of the area is incompatible with the maintenance of the significance o f the site.
