Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:

373602. Near the junction of Pheasant Creek and the Wentworth River, 16 kilometres north-east of Dargo.

Abstract:

Exposures of Wentworth Group Sediments and faulted contact with Ordovician sediments.

Access:

Jones Road off Mt Baldhead Road.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology:

The simple synclinal fold structure of the Wentworth Group typical of the sediments in the northern outcrop areas is disrupted at this site by block faults. Steeply dipping sandstones and mudstones of the Tabberabbera Formation are downthrown against Ordovician sandstone, quartzite and shales at this site. These sediments are exposed in road cutting on Jones Road and strike at approximately right angles to each other. The faulted contact is obscured by regolith.

Significance:

Local. The Wentworth Group normally lies unconformably on the Ordovician rocks and the faulted contact in the northern outcrop extremity is therefore of interest.

Management:

Maintenance of clear exposures in the Jones Road road cuttings will enhance the significance of the site.
