This information has been developed from the publications:

    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers.
    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Gippsland Lakes Catchment (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in East Gippsland, Victoria (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

040810. Twenty kilometres north-west of Dargo.
Image: East Gippsland Sites of Significance
Cliff at the Wongungarra River (Howitt 1877).

Access:

Sarah Spur Track.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Here the Wongungarra River is deeply entrenched with incised meanders and short parallel tributaries from the bordering slopes. The river cliffs expose folded structures in the Ordovician sediments and these were observed and sketched by Howitt in his 1877 report. A spur at 060833 is capped with a residual of Older Volcanics basalt.

Significance:

Regional. The site illustrates the process of deep valley incision. The basalt residual indicates the former extent of Older Volcanics.

Management:

Forest activities should not be permitted in the area and roadworks, if required, should be restricted to the spur crests.
