Location:

064737 to 150738. Two kilometres south, to nine kilometres south-east of Longford.

Abstract:

Outcrops of Gippsland Limestone, Monocline.

Access:

South Gippsland Highway and Longford-Golden Beach Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

The small block of higher relief to the south of the Latrobe River at Longford, is a topographic expression of the Baragwanath Anticline and the Rosedale Monocline. On the north-facing edge of the escarpment of the structures are small outcrops of Gippsland Limestone which are well exposed in several quarries near Longford. The outcrops are of fossiliferous, marly limestone overlain by a distinctive, white to creamy grey, massive bryozoan limestone including large
Cellepora and other mega fossils. This upper unit is defined as the Glencoe Limestone, with the type locality at Brocks Quarry (114742).

Significance:

Regional. The exposures are of major importance in determining the Lower Miocene stratigraphy of the Sale - Yarram area.

Management:

Abandoned quarry faces, if occasionally cleared, would provide reference and teaching sites if access could be maintained.
