Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. The Sentinels. Escarpments of Wellington Rhyolite.

Abstract:

Escarpment in Wellington Rhyolite.

Access:

Road from Licola to McFarlanes Saddle, walk along McFarlanes Saddle Track across Big Plain, then take south-east track at Little Plain along Miller Hut Track to Gable End.

Geology:

Upper Devonian Wellington Rhyolite.

Geomorphology:

The Sentinels, or Wellington Knob, overlook Lake Tali Karng and the Wellington Basin at the northern end of Gable End. Gable End represents the south-western limits of the Mt Wellington Plateau and High Plains. The average elevation of Gable End/The Sentinels is 1540 m, precipitous cliffed sectors average 600 m relative relief with prominent rock outcrops in the upper portions of the cliff forming stepped and terraced cliff-top scarps or escarpments. It is possible these over-steep cliff-top sectors are susceptible to occasional rock falls and account for the scree slopes found at the base of the Wellington Plateau.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site, the value of the significant/geomorphological features is unlikely to be seriously reduced by localised disturbance.
