14.9 Australites - Moonlight Head

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:14-915095. Track to "Rivernook" from Moonlight Head Road.

Moonlight Head Road.

Ownership:

Crown land (Otway National Park).

Geology:

Baker (1950) reported finding 15 australites (a small button shaped glassy type of meteorite) on or adjacent to the "Rivernook" track and others have since been discovered.

Significance:

Regional. Australites have been recorded from a number of localities to the west of here. They are objects of considerable interest, and any further finds should be recorded by reporting to the Geological Survey Branch of the Department of Minerals and Energy or the National Museum.
