18.9 Apollo Bay Escarpment and Terrace

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:18-318088. One kilometre north of Apollo Bay.

Access:

Great Ocean Road, Mariners Lookout Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

There is some evidence that the escarpment that extends west from Skenes Creek and lies inland from Apollo Bay is in part of a fault scarp (Stirling 1901; Medwell 1971).

The slopes and coastal terraces that lie in front of this are therefore of compound origin and include the effects of tectonics, sea level changes and marine and sub-aerial erosion and deposition. The escarpment is best preserved immediately west of Wild Dog Creek where it rises from sea levels to 300 metres in a smooth steep concave profile as there are no conspicuous outcrops on the scarp face. The lower slopes are shaped by colluvial downwash and it is not clear to what extent the terraces that lie at the slope foot are erosional or depositional.

Significance:

Regional. The site illustrates various problems in determining the age and origin of coastal escarpments and terraces in the Otways area.
