2.3.3 - How much irrigation water is required?

The amount of irrigation water needed for optimum pasture production (Table 2.3) will depend on both the amount of pasture water use (Table 2.1) and the amount of effective rainfall during the irrigation season. The calculated amount of irrigation required (Table 2.3) assumes that 80 % of the total rainfall infiltrates (‘effective rainfall’) and contributes to actual pasture water use.

The average volume of irrigation required varies across northern Victoria, increasing towards the north and west (Table 2.3).
