B22

55–115

Grey (2.5Y5/1); medium clay; plastic; weak subangular blocky structure; strong consistence dry; moderately sticky consistence wet; pH 7.6; gradual boundary to:

B23

115–180

Light grey (2.5Y7/2); medium clay; plastic; weak subangular blocky structure; strong consistence dry; moderately sticky consistence wet; pH 8.5.
Management considerations
  • Cracking clay profile, high clay percentage
  • Neutral thin surface soil and subsoil, alkaline at depth
  • Structured surface, occasional self mulching feels lighter than lab data suggests (subplastic)
  • Calcium percentage decreasing with depth
  • Lighter coloured deep subsoil, poorer internal drainage
  • Subsoil is strongly sodic and salinity very high , particularly below 55cm
  • Cracking may allow air and seasonal moisture to penetrate
  • Very strong consistence when dry, implications for compaction and implement use
  • Landform element, flat: poor site drainage
