Description

A1

0–10

Brown (10YR4/3) sandy clay loam; massive (structureless) strong consistence (dry), slightly friable (moist); few amounts of fine and medium quartz; pH 6.3; sharp boundary to:

A2

10–50

Very pale brown (10YR7/3) conspicuously bleached (10YR8/2d) sandy loam; massive (structureless); strong consistence (dry), friable (moist), non-plastic and non-sticky (wet); light to moderate amounts of fine and medium quartz; water seepage at about 45-50cm; pH 6.8; sharp boundary to:

B1

50-90

Brownish yellow (10YR6/8) with very pale brown (10YR7/4) and yellowish red (5YR5/6)mottles; sandy clay; moderate medium parting to fine angular blocky structure; smooth ped-fabric; very firm consistence (dry), friable (moist); few to common fine quartz; pH 6.3; clear boundary to:

B2

90-120

Light brownish grey (2.5Y6/2) with red (2.5YR4/6) and strong brown (7.5YR5/6) mottles; heavy clay with some sand; moderate medium parting to fine angular blocky structure; smooth ped-fabric; very firm consistence (dry), moderately friable (moist); few to common fine and medium quartz; some gleying; pH 6.0.
Management considerations
  • Texture contrast soil, slightly acidic
  • Poor structure, can restrict air and water movement
  • Sand throughout profile, relatively deep subsurface horizon, less physical impedance to roots
  • Mottled subsoil is often an indication of poor profile drainage, particularly at depth
  • Relatively low nutrient availability, particularly in subsurface soil
  • Landform element, valley flat; poor site drainage
