Quantong Sand

Map Symbol: Qs

Geology: Late Pleistocene to Holocene, Molineaux - Lowan Sands.

Landform: Dune crests and slopes. The shallow phase mapping unit may occur on slopes.

Occurrence of Quantong Sand (Qs): This occurs as a co-dominant soil mapping unit in the dune and swale landscape unit and as a sub-dominant soil unit in the river frontage landscape unit. There is a minor occurrence in the prior stream flood plain landscape unit. It usually occupies the crests of linear east-west dunes. The soil unit is found throughout the Quantong and Haven areas, mainly west of the Henty Highway.

Occurrence of the Shallow Phase (Qssp): The shallow phase indicates that the surface soil only goes to approximately 75 cm in depth. This unit also occurs in the dune and swale and river frontage landscape units. It usually occupies the mid-slope and sometimes the foot slope positions of the east-west dunes and is found in the Quantong and Haven areas south west and south of Horsham.

Representative Soil Type: Site IS26

Vegetation: Areas mapped as Quantong sand and its shallow phase may have been occupied by the heath woodland and tall woodland formation characterised by the Brown Stringybark (E. baxterii), Apple Box (E. aromaphloia), Yellow Box (E. melliodora) and Yellow Gum (E. leucoxylon) association.
