Bunguluke Series


Soils included in this series have distinct texture contrasts between hard setting surface soil horizons and moderately to strongly pedal clayey subsoils. Conspicuously bleached A2 horizons are present. The uppermost subsoil layer, that is at least 15 cm thick is mottled and dominantly yellow to yellow-grey. The soil reaction trend is alkaline.

In the present survey, this series consists of one soil type and one phase:

Bunguluke Sandy Clay Loam (BU scl)

Profile Morphology:

Surface Soil - A1 horizon

  • About 10 cm thick.
  • Dark brown to dark reddish brown.
  • Sandy clay loam.
Surface Soil - A2 horizon
  • About 10 cm thick.
  • Brown to yellowish brown (moist), conspicuously bleached near white (dry).
  • Sandy clay loam to sandy loam.
Subsoil
  • Mottled reddish brown, yellowish red and/or grey.
  • Medium to heavy clay.
Soil Inclusions
  • Trace to slight amounts of soft and/or hard calcium carbonate occur at about 40 cm, gradually increasing up to heavy amounts at about 70 cm.

Occurrence:

Bunguluke Sandy Clay Loam is usually found near lake beds and in shallow depressions and drainage lines. It is generally, associated with areas subject to frequent waterlogging.

Phases:

.Deep surface:
  • The total depth to the clayey subsoil is about 50 cm, with the A2 horizon occupying about 80% of the surface soils.
  • Occurs in the flood plains, lake beds and areas with prolonged waterlogging.
