4-12 "Stony Rises" on the Tyrendarra lava flow

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Locality:

7221-690850. Seven kilometres north-east of Homerton.

Access:

Coustleys Road off Woolsthorple-Heywood Road.

Ownership:

Private/Public Land adjacent to Darlot Creek.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Darlot Creek is a lateral stream along the western edge of the Tyrendarra lava flow. Heytesbury (Glenelg) Group limestone is exposed in an undercut bank on the west of the stream. The vegetated lava surface here is irregular with numerous rocky ridges and depressions resulting probably from the collapse of tunnels and tubes in the flow surface.

Significance:

Regional. The site displays the typical characteristics of the western side of the Tyrendarra lava flow. In particular the lateral nature of Darlot Creek is evident here.

Management:

The important feature at the site is the exposure of basalt and limestone in opposite banks of Darlot Creek. Any road or bridge construction in this area should be planned so as to leave these exposures clear.

The forested areas of the Tyrendarra flow are of interest in studies of plant succession and evidence for this is obtained from the nature of the terrain surface, e.g. the arrangement of individual boulders and blocks. Since this area contains some relatively undisturbed woodland, it is recommended that further clearing is prohibited.
