2-6 Swan Lake karst area

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7121-290700. Approximately 14 kilometres north-west of Bridgewater Lakes.

Access:

Swan Lake Road off Portland-Nelson Road.

Ownership:

Private Land and some Crown Land (Discovery Bay Coastal Park).

Geology/Geomorphology:

The Swan Lake area contains an undulating karst landscape with closed depressions and broad dolines. Pavement and karren has developed on the limited limestone exposures. One small cave is known east of Swan Lake and others may exist.

Significance:

Unknown. This area is a good example of a varied karst landscape that includes pavement and karren development. The full cave potential of the area is not known.

Management:

Further pine planting should not be permitted on the karst area delineated as site 2-6 especially where these would replace native forests and heathlands. Rubbish dumping should be prohibited.
