18.8 Wild Dog Gorge

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:18-328097. Five kilometres north-east of Apollo Bay.

The mouth of Wild Dog Creek

Access:

Wild Dog Creek Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Outcrops along the lower section of the Wild Dog Creek indicate the valley is aligned along a fault trending north-north-west. The fault truncates the steeply dipping beds of the Skenes Creek Monocline to the east. The narrowness of the gorge 700 m north of the Great Ocean Road suggests that in recent geological times the stream has breached resistant outcrops that would have caused a waterfall at that point in the valley. The narrow spurs in the core of the entrenched meanders north of the gorge and hanging valleys above the gorge give further evidence of a recent stage of rapid valley down cutting. The site makes an interesting contrast with the falls and outcrops at
Site 18.7 - Rusty Road Falls.

Significance:

Regional. The geological structures and the physiography of the area shown are clear examples of the tectonic and erosional processes that have shaped much of the Otways coast. They are readily accessible to view and hence are useful reference and teaching sites.
