This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:18-368106. One kilometre east of Skenes Creek.

Access:

Great Ocean Road.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology:

A narrow coastal terrace (200 metres wide) extends for 300 metres east of Skenes Creek. The terrace surface has a thick remnant capping of Dilwyn Formation.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of several similar terraces that occur on the eastern Otways coast, others include Pt. Franklin, Marengo, Apollo Bay and near Sugarloaf Hill. They are up to 10 metres high and may represent remnants of shore platforms formed at a higher Pleistocene sea level. The closer study of height correlation and mapping surface, form and materials will contribute to better understanding the record of sea level change in western Victoria.
