19.9 Cape Patton - Tertiary Sediments

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:19-456137. One kilometre west of Cape Patton on the crest of the ridge above Cape Patton.

Access:

Great Ocean Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geomorphology:

A deposit described as a "fossiliferous ironstone conglomerate" was reported from the ridge above Cape Patton by Stirling (1901) and Dennant (1902). Subsequent surveys have been unable to define, on palaeontological grounds, the exact stratigraphic position of this material which is up to 150 metres above sea level.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of a small number of high level early Tertiary sediments found in the main body of the Otway Ranges. It is significant for its height, its composition and relationship to the Mesozoic rocks, and its poorly understood stratigraphic position.
