This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:25-314063. South-western edge of Apollo Bay town including the area north and south of the Barham River.

Road cutting into terrace - Apollo Bay. Weathered

Tertiary (A) overlies Mesozoic (B).

Access:

Barham Valley Road.

Ownership:

Mostly private land. An important geological section is seen in a road cutting on Barham Valley Road.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Several terrace levels occur in the Apollo Bay town area, the highest being a ridge above the sports ground. The terrace surface is developed on deeply leached and ferruginous Dilwyn Formation sand which is exposed in a road cutting where it overlies weathered Mesozoic sandstone. The terraces are incised by the Barham River which has a well defined floodplain/infilled estuary margin.

Significance:

Regional. These are examples of the various terrace levels along the eastern Otway coast.
