GL13 (8422) Gravel Ridges on Lake King Shoreline - Broome Point

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:655103 (8422). Two kilometres south-east of the Nicholson River mouth.

Abstract:
Gravel beaches and ridges.

Access:
Boat from Lake King.

Ownership:
Private land.

Geomorphology::
The shoreline includes beaches of coarse sand and gravel surrounded by gravely beach ridges.

Significance:
Local. The site indicates the capacity of wave action to form gravel beaches on the shores of Lake King at the present time. It allows comparison to be made with relict beach features in other parts of the Lakes, e.g. McLeod Morass (GL-20 (8422)).

Management:
Limited quarrying of gravel would not detract from the importance of the site however, a substantial sector of the ridges should not be left undisturbed. (Compare with site GL-20 McLeod Morass.)
