Geology/Geomorphology: | The shore platform south-west from Von Mueller Creek is cut into Mesozoic siltstone that strikes parallel to the coast and dips seaward at 10o to 15o. The surface of the inter-tidal platform is almost flat but the seaward edge consists of a well defined rampart of ferruginised fine arkose that stands up to one metre above the general platform level. Gill (1972) suggests this differential weathering and erosion pattern is due to the rampart being a relict Last Glacial subsoil weathering horizon and hence more resistant to water level weathering and wave attack. Section of inter-tidal shore platform in unoxidized siltstone with rampart of mostly ferruginised fine arkose 0.6 km SW of Von Mueller Creek, Otway coast, Victoria, Australia. Tidal range 1.5 m. Aspect - moderately exposed. Profile of shore platform at Von Mueller Creek.
Significance: | Regional. The site very clearly demonstrates a process of shore platform development that is common on the eastern Otways Coast.
