25.5 The Blowhole

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:25-295028. Two kilometres south-west of Marengo.

Former platform (A) at rear of the cliff at The Blowhole.

Access:

Coastal walk from Marengo.

Ownership:

Crown land and private land.

Geomorphology:

An active blowhole is not obvious at this site. The feature of interest is a cliff and bench, above which is a degraded bluff backed by a narrow terrace. On the higher terrace, there are rounded cobbles and boulders. These suggest that the terrace is an emerged sea floor or platform, with boulder beach deposits.

Significance:

State. The site is of considerable importance in the analysis of Pleistocene sea level changes. The details of the sequence of emerged shoreline features has yet to be researched.
