G13 - Yarra Fault - Colluvial Gravels

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:AMG Ref: 528274, 533280 (gravel quarries).
Image: Upper Yarra Sites of Significance
Colluvial gravels at site G13.

Access:

MMBW Aqueduct Road from Glenview Road.

Geomorphology:

These two small quarries provide exposure of the colluvial gravels that have accumulated on the lower slopes of the Yarra Fault escarpment. The angular, unsorted nature of the material clearly differentiates from the higher level gravel alluvial remnants near Yering Gorge.

Significance:

Regional. This is the best site in the study area to display the fabric of the colluvium that flanks the escarpment.

Management:

Class 2. When abandoned, it would be desirable to leave at least one of the main quarry faces as a reference site to display the gravels. The quarries should therefore not be completely reclaimed or rehabilitated.
