182. Saltwater Creek - Incised Floodplain

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:Somers – 425416. Between Anchorage Road and Red Rocks Road at Ventnor.
Access:Anchorage Road or Red Rocks Road.
Ownership:Mainly private land and some Crown land.
Geomorphology:The lower valley of Saltwater Creek is alluviated forming a single low terrace north-east of Anchorage Road. As streamflow is intermittent and the mouth frequently sand-blocked, the incision and terrace formation are relict landform features.
Significance:Local. Saltwater Creek has the only well defined drainage channel and terrace and is the only valley open to the sea on the north coast of Phillip Island.
Management:Class 2. Artificial drainage or straightening of the incised channel should not be undertaken. Residential subdivision or reclamation of the terrace surface should not be permitted.
