Beaufort Marine Sandstone Land Unit

This land unit occurs on the Cambro-Ordovician marine sandstone around Beaufort. The landform consists of a ridge of rolling low hills in association with dissected undulating rises. The dominant soil type is a Brown Sodosol, although Chromosols can be intermixed with Sodosols. The soils on the lower slopes and gentler slopes tend to be deeper than those closer to the crest. The soils on the crests and steeper slopes are commonly stony gradational soils (Rudosols, Dermosols), or soil with coarse sandy topsoils on the steeper hills. The soils on the drainage depressions dissecting the low hills and rises tend to be Yellow or Brown Dermosols or Brown Sodosols. Land uses on the crests and steeper slopes of this land unit are restricted due to landform and soil type constraints. The land use is also restricted in highly dissected areas due to landform and drainage constraints.
